Etienne Avril (1748-1791) - Cabinetmaker - Master's degree obtained November 23, 1774: A cabinetmaker during the reign of Louis XVI, Etienne Avril is known for his furniture with panels framed with bronze baguettes. Called Avril l'aîné (Avril the elder) to avoid confusing him with his brother Pierre, Etienne Avril opened his main store on rue de Charenton, at the corner of rue Moreau, as well as several stores near porte Saint-Antoine. He received numerous commissions, including from Queen Marie-Antoinette for her apartment in the Château de Saint-Cloud.
During the course of his career as a cabinetmaker, Etienne Avril sold "numerous commodes, consoles, bookcases, secretaries and chiffonniers in mahogany and Indian wood, night tables...". His furniture is most often in mahogany and satinwood. They are characterized by rigorous, simple lines and large, plain surfaces, typical of the Louis XVI style. Avril's work also includes, albeit to a lesser extent, furniture in lemon veneer, rosewood and a few models in geometric marquetry. The shapes are clean, light and well-proportioned, and the bronzes are almost absent, visible only at the lock escutcheons and sometimes in the form of fine framing strips that emphasize the furniture's architecture. Finally, although less frequent, he made a few mahogany sideboards and tric trac tables.
At the dawn of the French Revolution, Etienne Avril sold his store on rue de Charenton, keeping only the stores on porte Saint-Antoine. After his death, several auctions, each lasting several days, were organized to empty them of the incalculable number of goods he had accumulated.

Louis XVI period, circa 1780, 18th century.
