Large cylinder desk topped with a bookcase topped with mercury mirrors in moiré and speckled Cuban mahogany veneer, brass fillets. The cylinder, once opened, reveals cardboard boxes covered in green leather gilded with small irons. On the sides two leather zippers for the work of secretaries. It is topped with molded turquin blue marble. Parisian work from the end of the Louis XVI or Directory period, around 1800.
Created at the end of the reign of Louis
Our cylinder desk opens with a sliding tray, 3 drawers in the upper box, topped by a cupboard lined with mercury mirrors, 3 small drawers in the cylinder (for pencils, quills and inkwells) and 3 archive boxes (cardboard boxes) in leather-covered cardboard, under the belt 4 large drawers including a double drawer hiding a chest.
Mounted on oak, our desk is very carefully made in Paris, not stamped. Note the following details, signs of high quality:
- veneered with beautiful mahogany with moire and speckled effect
- rich brass trim
- all cloverleaf locks (complication created at the end of the 18th century to make locks unpickable)
- the cardboard makers which are a great originality
- luxury turquin blue marble
Our desk is a large, spectacular model, rare in the library configuration but it is not the "giant" model. It takes the place of a large chest of drawers measuring 130 x 60cm.
Very good condition, the buffer varnish has been cleaned and repolished by our cabinetmaker. The leathers and cardboard were remade in the 20th century (leather lightened by the sun). the mercury ice creams are nicely and evenly bitten. The marble is old, but probably brought back at a later date.
