Carpenter-cabinetmaker marquetry maker. Paris. Master on December 17, 1767. "He started in the Workshop of a Son of Boulle of which he made imitations. He used mahogany in large quantities and was one of the precursors of the Empire style.
After working for one of the Boulle sons, Étienne Levasseur became a privileged worker on rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine where he began the manufacturing, but above all the restoration of a large number of marquetry furniture. Close to one of the descendants of Louis XIV, he is frequently entrusted with the restoration of furniture. After obtaining his master's degree in 1767, he worked for the Garde Meuble de la Couronne and produced numerous works for the castles of Versailles, Fontainebleau and Saint-Cloud. He was requested by the Count of Artois for his Hotel du Temple and also received numerous commissions from the Daughters of Louis XV, for the Château de Bellevue. Étienne Levasseur was a skilled cabinetmaker and all the furniture signed with his stamp is neat, of great taste and of very high quality. Most were made using the Boulle technique, in copper and scale marquetry. He made Boulle furniture identical to the originals of such quality, which could have led one to believe that it was Louis XIV furniture which would have been restored. he also left a purely personal production, in Louis XVI style, with moiré mahogany veneer, admirably well constructed, with perfect proportions and finely chiseled bronze frames. Some of his works, but rarer, were covered with rosewood, lemon tree or amaranth. His workshop was taken over by his son Pierre-Etienne, then by his grandson Levasseur Jeune, who both continued to perpetuate his know-how and traditions.
