Sumptuous Louis XV style inlaid chest of drawers after Jean Henri Riesner richly adorned with gilded bronzes. Copy of the chest of drawers made for the Palace of Versailles in 1778. Geometric marquetry decor and still life. White veined marble top. Dimension height 93 cm for a width of 164 cm for a depth of 66 cm. This chest of drawers dates from the second half of the 20th century and comes from a beautiful hotel on the French Riviera. Jean Henri Riesner Received master in 1768, he was appointed ordinary cabinetmaker of Crown furniture in 1774 to replace Gilles Joubert. He then entered a period of success that lasted nearly ten years. Privileged cabinetmaker, housed and protected by the king, Jean-Henri Riesener thus has the possibility of breaking all the rules and works as he pleases. From the storage inventory, we know that from 1774 to 1784 he delivered nearly 700 pieces of furniture for the yard. If they do not sign them all, they usually have a numbered label on the reverse. Riesener finally declined in the 1785s when he was gradually ousted from the Crown Furniture Repository because of the unreasonable prices he charged. We prefer his counterpart Beneman. Riesener still remains in favor with the queen who still places orders with him. During the revolutionary sales, Riesener bought back some of the furniture he delivered to the Garde-Meuble. He then considered reselling them and tried to do so on several occasions. To do this, he publishes an advertisement which proposes: "the fine cabinetmaking works from the factory of Citizen Riesener, cabinetmaker, knowledge: secretaries, chests of drawers, desks, tables and bookcases, toilets, cassettes, travel secretaries, the larger part of the best polished mahogany, pieces related to the shaded marquetry, ebony intended for the interior cabinet of the Palace of Versailles, all richly adorned with beautiful friezes and garlands, flowers and ornaments, new models, superior and chiseled by the most skilful artists of Paris and the most beautiful gilding in mast gold ”.
