Pierre DENIZOT
Cabinetmaker,
Son of cabinetmaker and merchant Jacques Denizot, he worked in his father's workshop.
Although he obtained his master's degree in 1740, he did not register it until 1760, when his father died. It was only then that he began to mark his works with his personal stamp.
He established his business on rue Neuve-Saint-Roch, working on behalf of his colleague Léonard Boudin.
He received a large number of royal and princely commissions for the châteaux of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Maisons Lafitte.
From 1764 to 1766, he was a sworn accountant for his guild and, from 1776, became the official supplier to the Comte d'Artois, to whom he delivered all kinds of furniture, both luxury and ordinary.
He possessed great technical skill and produced works mainly in the Louis XV and Transition styles.
His creations are mostly inlaid with geometric motifs, circles, squares, lozenges or rigorously designed floral and trophy motifs. Pierre Denizot died in his workshop in 1782, executing a commission from one of his clients, Monsieur, Comte de Provence.
On July 29 and November 27, 1782, the "Annonces, Affiches et Avis divers" mentioned an auction organized after the cabinetmaker's death, in which, in addition to a large stock of mahogany, amaranth and ebony, a significant number of chests of drawers, cupboards, cylinder desks, secretaries, game tables, etc. were listed.
His works can be found in a number of museums, including:
- Musée Jacquemard-André (Paris)
- Musée Cognacq-Jay (Paris)
- Musée des Arts Décoratifs (Lyon)
- Victoria and Albert Museum (London)
