    sarrancolin iIlhet or fantastico

the ILHET variety is quarried in the village of sarrancolin in the high Pyrenees.
The quarries enjoyed their greatest glory during the reign of Louis XIV, and were considered a royal quarry as early as 1692.
This exceptional marble was used to make the pedestal of Louis XIV, designed by Le Berrin and now housed at the Château de Versailles.
Between 1686 and 1689, forty blocks of Sarancolin were shipped to Louis XIV's royal quarries.
In 1692, they were decreed "royal quarries" on his behalf. In the 19th century, this marble was used to make 30 monolithic columns for the Garnier opera house.
