This commode d'apparat is taken from a work of cabinetmaking by Guillaume Benneman (1750-1811) and Joseph Stöckel (1743-1802).
This perfectly executed piece of furniture was originally commissioned by Marie-Antoinette.
The chest of drawers opens with two doors generously decorated with gilded bronzes featuring scrolls, friezes and acanthus leaves.
The central mascaron faithfully reproduces a scene by the sculptor Claude Michel dit Clodion (1738-1814).
These doors feature an original offset lock and key.
The interior features four identical spaces.
The waistband conceals three drawers with an interlacing design underlined by bronze baguette.
The central drawer features a bronze lion's mouth as an entrance.
The front and rear uprights, with acanthus and asparagus leaf drops, end in "toupie" feet adorned with collars and large palmette hooves.
The sides are carved in the same spirit, with masks depicting scenes.
The whole piece is topped with a thick Carrara marble that follows the lines of the cabinet and is bordered by a frieze of oves.
The many hours of work required for this creation, both for the ornamental part and the structure, reveal a breathtaking rendering where mastery and artistry came together to give birth to this Marie-Antoinette commode.
