Tombel-shaped chest of drawers in marquetry of scrolled cartouches veneered with rosewood in amaranth wood surrounds. Fine chased and gilded bronze trim (original) typical of the foliate Rocaille taste: draw handles, key escutcheons, falls, apron motif, sabots and baguettes highlighting the front jambs. It opens with 4 drawers on 3 rows and is topped with a beautiful gray Sainte Anne marble molded in a "bec de corbin" pattern. Louis XV period, circa 1750, stamped twice by Lebesgue, probably for Claude Lebesgue.
Claude I Lebesgue, Maitre ébéniste before 1737, active in Paris in the first half of the 18th century. Cabinetmakers practiced from father to son under the ancien régime, and he is probably the father of Claude-Pierre, maitre in 1750, and Robert-Claude, maitre in 1771, and the brother of François, also a cabinetmaker, who died in 1765.
Our commode is a fine example of its kind, characterized by elegant lines and curves, marquetry and gilded bronzes. It is also interesting for its dimensions: it gives the illusion of being a large commode, but doesn't take up too much floor space.
Very good overall condition, varnish cleaned and repolished by our cabinetmaker, slightly lighter on the sides, marble intact, bronzes re-gilded with fine gold in the 20th century.
