Furniture of very fine craftsmanship, stamped JME, Poinçon des Jurandes, and stamped on its Front Left Upright by the renowned Master Cabinetmaker Jean - Baptiste VASSOU (1739 - 1807).

Jean - Baptiste Vassou (1739 - 1807)
Cabinetmaker. Paris. Mastered on January 28, 1767. Vassou made a name for himself by producing an abundance of fine furniture, almost all of it Transitional or Louis XVI period. Jean-Baptiste Vassou began his career on rue Saint-Nicolas under the sign "La Tête Noire" and obtained his master's degree in 1767. His output is quite abundant. Almost all his furniture, in the Transition style, is mahogany and often very tall in proportion to its width. He uses only satinwood or rosewood veneers, and his marquetry is light, with large floral decorations. Neither bronze nor violet wood are used in his work. On the whole, unlike many of his colleagues, his works are cheerful and pleasing. In 1799, Jean-Baptiste Vassou moved his workshop to rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, where his youngest son Jean-Louis succeeded him.

Louis XVI period, circa 1770, 18th century.
