A handsome jumper chest of drawers in satin-finish marquetry veneered with butterfly wings and horizontal fillets. It opens with 2 drawers. Finely chased and gilded bronzes. Light-colored Languedoc red marble. Made in Paris, entirely on oak. Early Louis XV period circa 1750: the model still has reminiscences of the Régence style.
Our commode is a fine example. Unsurprisingly, it bears the stamp of a great master: Hubert Hansen.
After obtaining his master's degree in 1747, Hubert Hansen set up his workshop on rue de Charenton and died a few years later, in 1756. The many pieces he left behind are in the Louis XV style, classically shaped, worked with great taste and elegance, generally in rosewood and violetwood veneer, richly decorated with flowers, branches and rocaille bronzes.
Languedoc red marble has been so popular since the 17th century that it became a royal quarry in 1692, under the direct control of the Bâtiments du Roi. Called the "Carrière du Roy" during the reign of Louis XIV, the latter used it extensively, notably for the Palais de Versailles, Saint-Cloud and many other royal buildings.
The chest of drawers is in excellent condition, varnished and refinished by our cabinetmaker, with superb veneering. The rocaille handles are antique, but not original.
