Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904) La Berce des près, 1902,
The only known copy to date
Exceptional chest of drawers, called Sauteuse, in ash veneer and carved and stained beech. The suspended body receives the two drawers with a decoration on the front, of Berces des près bordering a marsh with water lilies and animated by a frog, made in marquetry of precious and indigenous woods. The openwork and carved belt takes up the decorative theme of umbellifers. The four corner jambs are treated and carved in the arborescent taste of the stems of the hogweed. The top consists of a scalloped overflowing tray. The paneled back is made of walnut. Condition and restorations of use.
Signed GALLÉ in vertical Japanese letters in the marquetry decoration.
Important:
From the series of furniture La Berce des près by Émile Gallé, only this model of chest of drawers had escaped any iconography, ancient or modern. Until today, only the preparatory drawings of the piece of furniture, some of its details and the execution tracing of the marquetry decoration were known, all of these documents being kept at the Musée d’Orsay.
