LOUIS DELAIRE, Master November 19, 1738.
Parisian cabinetmaker Louis Delaitre had been working for several years as a free-lance craftsman on rue de Lappe, when he earned his master's degree. He later resided on rue Saint-Nicolas, from where he disappeared around 1750. In his workshop on rue Saint-Nicolas, he produced furniture in the early Louis XV and even full Regency styles. These were mainly chests of drawers with rather massive forms, sometimes tomb-like, sloping desks and dressing tables with coffers, veneered in rosewood, violet wood or satinwood, and more rarely inlaid with flowers.
Delaitre also stamped furniture in copper and tortoiseshell marquetry in the Boulle style, such as a large flat desk adorned with mascarons, falls with bearded men's heads, foliate scrolls and bronze frames (Grands Ebénistes exhibition, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, 1955-1956, no. 67), but perhaps he only restored them. Finally, he supplied furniture to a number of well-known dealers, including his colleague Migeon. A Louis XV chest of drawers with two drawers and a corner unit are both stamped by him. It should be noted that Delaitre's commodes often feature extensive bronze ornamentation, sometimes Regency-inspired, sometimes more frankly Rocaille (Mobiliet et Ebénistes du xviiiè).
Louis XV period, circa 1740, 18th century.
