Jean-Charles Ellaume, sometimes known as Allaume or Elleaume (1714 – 1763), was a French cabinetmaker from the 18th century, who became a master on November 6, 17541.
His workshop was located until 1775 rue Traversière in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine district, in Paris2,3,4.
Biography
Stamp of master cabinetmaker Jean-Charles Ellaume. Paris 1754.
For more than thirty years, Jean-Charles Ellaume created numerous chests of drawers in the Louis XV, Regency and Louis XVI styles. He practices the frieze veneer technique. Its workmanship is careful: “tombeau” chest of drawers from the Regency period, with exposed crosspieces, small Louis XV chests of drawers with two drawers, also with exposed crosspieces1.
His workshop also produces furniture for his fellow cabinetmakers, such as Léonard Boudin or Jean-Baptiste Tuart. This production is much less important but of higher quality than the chests of drawers he produced for more than thirty years: beautiful flat desks fitted with rocaille bronzes, rare Louis XV chests of drawers and corners decorated, on a rosewood background, with very fine and very decorative marquetry of flowers, branches, tinted wooden musical instruments, in scrollwork frames5.1.
