Exceptional and rare chest of drawers with a crossbow front.

The uprights are pinched sides in precious and blond wood veneer, decorated with a marquetry of fillets and diamonds.

The sides are flared and finished with a slight projection. They have a diamond decoration inserted in a double frame.

It opens with 5 drawers on 3 rows. These drawers, in oak wood, are assembled with great precision. They are separated by visible crosspieces, in herringbone frieze.

It is dressed with a rich ornamentation of original bronzes, chiseled and gilded (lock entrances, falls, pull hands, slippers, lamp base ...) with rocaille decoration.

Its parquet floor receives a magnificent Aleppo breccia marble, sinuous, with a double corbin beak and a thickness of 32 mm

This chest of drawers is stamped "F G", 6 times, on the 4 uprights and the front crosspiece.

A crossbow chest of drawers, of the same model but of lesser quality, is kept at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris

François GARNIER

Father of the famous cabinetmaker Pierre Garnier, François Garnier worked on rue du Faubourg-Saint Antoine where he was a sworn member of the corporation of joiners-cabinetmakers from 1742 to 1744.
Since the use of the stamp was not obligatory during the beginning of his career, few works could be attributed to him with certainty. However, the signed furniture that we find shows great attention to detail and real talent.
  He died in Paris in 1774 on rue des Moineaux.
