Nicolas Petit - Cabinetmaker. Paris.
Mastered in 1761. His mark: "N. Petit" on a number of pieces of furniture in marquetry and ebony, proving his taste and talent.
Nicolas Petit opened his workshop on rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, under the sign "Au Nom de Jésus",
He worked there for more than thirty years, adapting seamlessly to the changing styles of the 18th century, and quickly established a reputation for himself. His career began with highly refined Louis XV-style curved chests of drawers, secretaries, desks and small tables, finely inlaid with flowering branches.
When the "Greek" taste appeared in furniture, around 1765, he proved to be one of the most ingenious in renewing the decoration, then the structure of his furniture, inspired by Classical Art. His Transition chests of drawers are often decorated with bronze urns surmounted by drapery, while others are inlaid with geometric or floral motifs.
Later, he worked in the Louis XVI style with equal ease, using marquetry as well as solid wood, mahogany or ebony.
Nicolas Petit's furniture, with its simple, classical decor, is always tasteful and carefully crafted.
