Magnificent Somno in mahogany and mahogany veneer from the "Retour d'Égypte" Empire-Consulate period.
Beautifully ornamented with finely chased gilded bronzes, feet and heads of Egyptian women wearing nemeses sit on spindle-shaped sheaths framing the door, symbolizing the guardians of the temple entrance.
Original black granite top. Key opening with two shelves inside.
Resting on small period castors (rare enough to be noted).
Literally in Latin "for sleep", the Somno was a new piece of furniture in the early 19th century. Designed for the bedroom, it was a particular form of bedside table. All-sided and always resting on a base, its pedestal-like form derives from the ancient altar. Part of the archeological movement dear to the painter David and widely developed by the ornamentalists Percier and Fontaine, this Somno model owes its production to prestigious cabinetmakers such as Pierre-Benoit Marcion and the Jacob brothers.
The Somno is basically four-sided, or "all-sided".
Later came the cylindrical Somno.
Attributed to Pierre-Benoit Marcion.
This somno was acquired with a barbiere with identical bronzes and mahogany, stamped P.MARCION, soon to be on sale in my gallery.
Superb state of preservation, restored by an art cabinetmaker, stamped varnish.
