Elegant early 19th century Empire/Restoration boat bed in flamed mahogany and finely chased bronze, mercury gilded with matte and bright gold.
One-piece, speckled mahogany side panels echo the overall curvature.
Original, mercury-gilded bronzes featuring palms, masks and rosettes, signed on the reverse "GA", probably for Claude Galle or Gérald-Jean Galle.
The bed is stamped 3 times "KOLPING" for Othon Kolping (1775-1853).

Othon Kolping (1775-1853), a Parisian cabinetmaker established around 1804 on Place St. Antoine, specialized in mahogany and light-wood furniture. His name is synonymous with quality. He acquired a good reputation in the 1820s and is considered one of the finest craftsmen of his time. Quoted in the Bazar Parisien of 1821, Kolping was considered "a good cabinetmaker. He invented several kinds of beds in the most pleasing forms..." and was also one of the inventors of the ice cabinet. He took part in the Expositions des Produits de l'Industrie in 1823 and 1827. He supplied furniture for the Imperial (1811) and Crown (1837) furniture stores. Some of his furniture can be found in the national furniture collections.
