Bronze tray with brown patina, signed Auguste Moreau (1834 –1917). Son of the sculptor Jean-Baptiste-Louis-Joseph Moreau and younger brother of the sculptors Hippolyte and Mathurin Moreau, he is recognized for producing mainly exceptional art bronzes. Having never received an official award, this notoriety will only occur post-mortem.
Auguste Moreau was inspired here by the painting “Un Marchand d’Esclaves” by the French painter Victor Giraud (1840-1871).
This work depicts a merchant asking for an audience with a nobleman. The slaves are presented, naked, in turn.
The rim of this dish is carved with openwork flower and leaf motifs.
A look at archaic practices now eradicated, this set will appeal to history lovers.
