Classically cylindrical with a conical lid, our pyxis is topped by a central custode. This original assembly makes it a collector's item of religious silverware.
Christ on the cross, surrounded by the two glorious stars, is depicted on the front of the custode housing the consecrated hosts. He is surrounded by three medallions representing God the Father, the Virgin Mary and Joseph. The ternary echoes the Holy Trinity.
Also engraved in Latin and Gothic letters are two verses from the Lauda Sion, written by Saint Thomas Aquinas in 1264: "Ecce panis angelorum factus cibus viatorum" or, "Here is the bread of angels, which has become the food of pilgrims".
The pyxis is closed by a small bishop's crook.
Precise Germanic work, circa 1850, in silver and vermeil.
