Statue in gilded wood representing the Child Jesus standing on a purple cushion carrying the crucigerous orb in his hand. French work from the second half of the 18th century.

As a Christian symbol, the orb symbolizes Christ's temporal and spiritual dominion over the world. In Western iconography, from the 15th century, a Christ carrying the orb in his hand receives the name of Salvator Mundi(savior of the world). The orb as a royal symbol is therefore a reminder for a king that he is the representative of Christ on earth.

Beautiful decoration in polychrome and gilded with gold leaf.

Very good condition, gold leaf gilding cleaned by our gilder.
