Theravada Buddhist monastery Sutra or Kammavaca (contents not -yet- translated), containing sacred texts from the Pali canon or monk ordination texts, handwritten (Pali script, Burmese script) on latanier (Palm doum) leaves.
The edges of the leaves are gilded with gold, sandwiched between two lacquered woods. The manuscript is wrapped in silk velvet (reflecting the status of the donor and the custom, such as a high dignitary or person of royal blood) and tightened by a ribbon embroidered with sacred writings, with the reading stylus slipped between its knots.
These manuscripts were often donated to monasteries by wealthy laymen, and the cloth not only protects the manuscript, but also has a spiritual value: by wrapping sacred texts in a precious cloth, one marks a profound respect for its contents.
Offering this type of manuscript to a monastery is a major act of merit (Karma), associated with devotion and support for Buddhist teachings, the Dharma.
    Burma, circa 1850.
Provenance: Collection of art dealer Claude de Marteau.
