*The Mother of God of Vladimir
also known as Our Lady of Vladimir, Virgin of Vladimir or Vladimirskaya, is one of the most revered Orthodox icons in Russia. The Mother of God (in Greek Theotokos), the Virgin Mary, is considered the holy protector of Russia. The icon is exhibited in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow (Church of Saint Nicholas of Tolmachi annexed to the museum). His feast day is June 3. Even more than the most famous icons, the original has been copied many times over the centuries, and many copies have acquired considerable artistic and religious significance. The icon is a version of the Eleousa type (Virgin of “Tenderness”), carrying the Child Jesus nuzzling against the maternal cheek. The Mother tilts her face towards the child who looks up at her with an anxious face.
    ** The “oclades”
or metal cover can be in sculpted silver, inlaid with enamels or even pearls, and are used for icons which allowed a miracle. There are several kinds of oclade: the “Basma” which only covers the frame of the object. And the “Riza” which covers the bottom of the icon and leaves only the bodies of the characters visible.
