The cult of Ursula and the Eleven Thousand Virgins was extremely popular in the Middle Ages, especially in Germany, the Netherlands, northern France and Italy. Ursula and her companions were canonized.
Set in a beautiful gilded wooden frame, a luminous reliquary features a radiant statue of the Virgin and Child, topped by a cherub. At its feet is the main relic, to which this devotional object is dedicated. Our relic thus bears the inscription "11,000 Virgins" and the year 1781.
In the same vein, we discover three catacomb relics on the lower part, which we imagine to be one of the many Ursuline martyrs. In the four corners, on beautiful gilded paper flowers, lie relics of Saint Ursula, echoing the main subject, as well as relics of Saint Felicis, Saint Joseph and Saint Bonaventure.
As is often the case, 8 relics are offered. The eight has no beginning and no end.
Dimensions with frame: 32 x 28 cm.
Dimensions of the reliquary itself, approx. 18 x 23.
