    DISH OF ALMS or PETITIONS
    Nuremberg, Germany 16th century
    Golden brass
    Diameter: 45 cm
    (accidents)

Also called an offering dish, this important circular dish in chiseled gilded brass, worked in embossed work, is centered on a central round medallion in relief around which a series of friezes of pomegranates, leaves and palms evolve in a concentric manner.
The edges are incised with friezes of oak leaves and flowered gadroons.
Trace of handwritten inscription on the reverse, presumably “33”?

In Christianity, pomegranates are a symbol of chastity and resurrection.
This dish was considered a liturgical object where alms were collected after the celebrations.
