Sébastien was born around 250 in Narbonne, to a Gallic father and a Milanese mother. When he came of age, he joined the Roman Praetorian army garrisoned in Rome and became a centurion in the 1st cohort of the Imperial Guard under the reign of Diocletian (Caius Aurelius Valerius Diocletianus Augustus).
On January 20, 288, he was martyred, tied to a tree trunk, his body pierced with arrows. He was left for dead, but miraculously survived.
