Rectangular miniature on ivory depicting a young woman offering a garland of flowers to Love, after the famous painting by Alexandre Roslin (in the Louvre), painted in 1783.
The identification of the model with the artist's eldest daughter, Augustine-Suzanne Roslin (born in 1760, married in 1780 to Louis Carteron de Barmont), who is said to have served as Roslin's model, reminding him of his own wife, who died in 1772, and with whom she bore a strong resemblance.
A young elegant woman, like a priestess in modern costume, offers flowers to the statue of Love (inspired by Falconet's famous sculpture, see the 1757 marble in the Louvre), the object of her love appearing, on the left, in the portrait of a young man (in Spanish costume) on a gilded wooden console.
Our work is of exceptional quality in terms of detail and technique.
It is signed lower right by Dumont.
It has its original burlwood veneered frame.
Late 19th c. work.
