Large oval miniature painted on ivory, depicting "Marie-Antoinette in front of the Temple of Love" after the painting by Jean Baptiste André d'Agoty in the Château de Versailles.
In its beautiful original frame, with slightly curved glass on the front, encircled by finely chased brass, as is the bélière, the back of this miniature is exceptionally made of blue glass set on a sheet of crumpled metallic paper.
Signed on the right-hand side Dubourg F (for Fecit), this miniature is dated 1780, a rare occurrence for this artist. The date of the miniature is the same as that of the painting by Gautier d'Agoty. As this painting must have been a great success, Dubourg made a miniature of it in this very fine medallion, certainly as a gift for the commissioner.
Georges-Nicolas-Toussaint AUGUSTIN, known as AUGUSTIN-DUBOURG, was born in Saint-Dié in 1750 and died in Paris around 1800. After working in Dijon and Lyon, he settled in Paris around 1791 as a miniature painter, where he exhibited at the Salon du Louvre in 1793, 1798 and 1800.
Height (without bezel): 12.2 cm.
