Magnificent inkwell, in chased ormolu and patinated bronze, in the form of a boat with snake-like prows.
The snakes, which serve as grips, are finely chased, as are the hulls and lids of the ink receptacles.
The floor of the boat, embellished with four orifices encircled by a ring delicately chiselled with striations, can accommodate as many feathers.
A beautiful allegory of Charon's boat, the mythological nocher who carries the souls of the dead across the river Styx. The whole, as was the trend at the end of the 18th century, with an Egyptian touch: the sacred bark, symbolizing the life, death and resurrection of Osiris.
Period: between the Directoire and Empire periods, 1790-1800.
Very good condition.
Dimensions:
Width: 30 cm
Height: 11 cm
Depth: 8cm
