Bronze inkwell (silver and brown patina) representing four figures, symbols of the four continents, supporting on their shoulders an armillary sphere, on a finely chased and openworked plate decorated with stylized shells as well as floral scrolls and arabesques and bunches of fruit, signed Lerolle Frères*, 19th century.
This inkwell is in good condition and of high quality. It has its own glassware inside.
The circumference of the sphere is chiseled with the names of the zodiac signs (pisces, virgo, gemini...); some are worn and illegible. The movement of the dancing figures symbolizes the Earth's rotation.
Please note: slight wear, particularly on the figures, micro-scratches and age-related wear, see photos.
* Lerolle Frères (act.1836-1863) :
The Lerolle brothers, who succeeded their father in 1836, founded Dantan's "Madame Alexis du Pont dans le pas styrien" in 1837. After 1850, they began producing galvanic bronzes and imitations, but were still listed as bronze founders in 1863. They took part in the Exposition des Beaux Arts Appliqués à l'Industrie, but mainly exhibited furniture objects and relatively few sculptures.
