Large marine or travel writing case in solid mahogany, with brass reinforcements.
The center features a cartouche reading "Lieut Général Villettes" (Lieutenant General Villettes).
It opens to reveal two writing trays with green felt-covered flaps; the first is held closed by two small brass plates and the second by a lock (no key). The interior is designed to receive mail.
It is lined with five compartments, the largest of which closes with a lid, while a secret system reveals small drawers.
On the right-hand side, it opens with a drawer fitted with a retractable handle.
As can be seen in the photo, a stopper keeps it partly open.
This fine English chest is in very good condition, and locks with its original key.
Mid-19th century.
