Beautiful gilt bronze mantelpiece or gallery fire, Consulat / Empire period, early 19th century circa 1800-1805.
Ornamented with two recumbent sphinxes on the side terraces; the gallery is adorned with palmettes and stars.
Our bar is a variant of another mantelpiece bar we present https://www.gslr-antiques.com/fr/boutique/autres/barre-cheminee-empire-sphinges-bronze-dore.php which is also a variant of a model in the collections of the Palais de Fontainebleau from the Hotel du Général Moreau, from which it was removed in 1804 (see N°265 page 264 Jean Pierre Samoyault - Pendules et bronze d'ameublement entrés sous le premier Empire). The maker of these bronzes has not been identified, but it can be assumed that he was a major Parisian bronzemaker supplying imperial furniture, such as Galle, Ravrio or Thomire.
A beautiful object in very good condition, ideal for completing an Empire period decoration. The mercury gilding is original, alleviated by exposure to the heat of the fireplace. Complete and functional. Slightly twisted, the base moldings at the ends have been reduced to fit a mantelpiece.
