Beautiful gilt bronze mantelpiece or gallery fire, Consulat / Empire period, early 19th century circa 1800-1805.
Adorned with two young Etruscan women in patinated bronze, seated on antique-style chairs and basking in the warmth of the fire. The side terraces are adorned with Medici Lions, their paws on a sphere. The original models of these sculptures were placed on either side of the entrance to the Villa Medici in Rome. Each lion holds a sphere under its paw, in reference to the six balls forming the coat of arms of the House of Medici. Relocated to Florence in 1789, copies were replaced at the Villa Medici in 1803 by Napoleon when he established the French Academy in Rome.
This Etruscan-style model with seated women is reminiscent of Claude Galle's reading clock (an example is shown in the last photo).
A beautiful object in very good condition, ideal to complete an Empire period decoration. The mercury gilding is original, faded by exposure to the heat of the fireplace. Complete and functional.
