*Jean-Claude Novaro (1943-2014)
master glassmaker born in Antibes (Alpes-Maritimes) in 1943. Trained from the age of 14 in Éloi Monod's glassworks in Biot, the teenager became a glassblower and then a colorist. At the age of 20, he became a master glassmaker, and was named "chef de la halle". He set up his own workshop in Biot in 1977, assisted by his wife. He works with both marble and tools, using hot-applications, reduction metallization and the addition of metals, metal oxides, gold leaf and various precious metals. From 1979 to 1981, he worked with Jean-Paul van Lith, who influenced him in his elegant, light, tachistic designs. Over the years, Jean-Claude Novaro has carried out a great deal of research. He invented a glass which, when mixed with powders, absorbs light to better restore it in the dark, in a series called Luminescences. Internationally renowned, he is considered one of today's greatest master glass artists. His works are exhibited at Nice airport and in numerous galleries. Some of his creations have been sold on American television: Fine Art Showcase, and he counts celebrities such as Prince Albert II of Monaco, Sheikh Tariq Al Qassimi, Robert De Niro, Bill Cosby, Mike Tyson, Philippe Monet and Jean Reno among his buyers. He is so famous that he has named a golf trophy after himself. In 2011, he opened a studio near Dubai, where he signed an agreement with the international Rak Ceramics group to design an exclusive range of tiles and sanitaryware.
