An elegant pair of vases or urns with butterfly motifs, crafted from finely chiseled and gilt bronze (often mistakenly referred to as cassolettes). The gilding alternates between bright and matte finishes. The lids, featuring butterfly-shaped handles, can be inverted to serve as candleholder, with sockets adorned with interlaced friezes and foliage. The vases are richly decorated with acanthus leaves, heart motifs, rosettes, and gadroons. A square base supports a cylindrical shaft with latticework and rosettes.
The exceptional quality of the casting, chiseling, and thick mercury gilding suggests the work of a renowned Parisian bronzier, such as Claude Galle (as evidenced by the design of the candle sockets).
