Rare yewwood box with intarsia decoration. 18th century. Entirely made of solid yew, a homogeneous, rot-resistant, dense and hard wood with a very fine grain. It is often marked with small black dots and very tightly grained. The decoration is made using the intarsia technique, which consists of incising the wood to inlay pieces of another wood. Boxwood and rosewood were used on this case. The decoration features foliate scrolls, flowers and fillets, punctuated by small rosewood rounds. The lock is functional and fitted with an antique key. Finished in waxed fill.
