An antique chest specially designed for tea, a precious commodity in the early Victorian era. This locked mahogany box preserved the leaves and was displayed in the drawing rooms of English aristocrats. This example has two compartments on the sides to differentiate between green and black tea. In the center, a sugar container is decorated with elegant ornamentation.
The sarcophagus-shaped box is highlighted by a small molding at the bottom and rests on four small "galette" feet. The lid, with its aligned frame, features a slightly softened "bec de corbin" molding around the perimeter. The top is composed of four pyramidal sections topped by a rectangle with small moldings. Two turned knobs on the sides of the chest allow it to be transported.
It is locked by an original double-hook lock with original key, and a recessed brass diamond-shaped entry. The interior features two mahogany compartments on either side, raised by small flaps on brass hinges.
This luxurious antique tea caddy will delight lovers of unique, authentic objects.
