* Khatam kari
is a fine, meticulous work of marquetry, the earliest examples of which date back to the Safavid era: khatam was so highly prized by the court that some princes learned the technique on a par with music, painting or calligraphy. Khatam-kari" is thus "inlay work". This technique consists in creating motifs, most often star shapes, by inlaying thin strips of wood (ebony, teak, jujube, orange, rose), brass (for the gilded parts), and camel bone (white parts). Decorated objects are legion: boxes, chess or backgammon sets, frames, pipes, desks, or even musical instruments. Khatam can also be combined with the famous Persian miniatures, creating veritable works of art. Derived from techniques imported from China and enhanced by Persian know-how, this craft has existed for over 700 years.
