Rare Louis XVI period marquetry Lombard box. Last quarter of the 18th century. Italy, Lombardy. The top features a "bons sauvages" décor in native and exotic wood marquetry. Sand-heated wood was used to create shading. The decoration features two dolphins or dragons, two figures dressed in leafy loincloths, and foliage and fruit scrolls. The whole is surmounted by a basket of flowers. The four sides of the box are inlaid with eight landscape and factory scenes in ovals. These are surrounded by foliate scrolls on a burrwood background. A frame of four fillets and a rosewood surround complete the decor. The finesse of this marquetry work is particularly noteworthy. The work is also reminiscent of the famous cabinetmaker Giuseppe Maggiolini. The woods used are fir for the structure, walnut, rosewood, boxwood, lemon, stained sycamore maple, plum, cherry, burr amboyna, and certainly others... This chest opens on one side with a drawer fitted with a bronze knob chased with a florette. It stands on four loaf feet. Varnished finish. More photos on antiquitesdelandelle.com
