* Shagreen
cartilaginous fish (ray or shark) leather long used in cabinetmaking, sheathing and, more recently, leather goods. Halfway between leather and mineral, shagreen is covered with silica pearls, making it difficult to tan. It can be granular and shiny, or sanded: in the latter case, it is smooth, revealing a surface studded with small cells. There are 2 types of shagreen: small-grained shagreen and coarse-grained shagreen. The origin of the word "shagreen" actually dates back to the 18th century. It's the name of the first craftsman in the West to work with dogfish and stingray leather. Jean-Claude Galluchat (with two "l "s) was a master sheath-maker to King Louis XV... or rather to the Marquise de Pompadour. This craftsman set such a high standard in his day for dressing the rarest objects (chests, trunks, sword handles, etc.) in this fish skin that his proper name became synonymous with the material. Forgotten in the 19th century, shagreen re-emerged in the decorative arts in 1920, showcased on furniture signed by the great "Art Déco" designers such as Paul Iribe, André Groult and Jules Leleu.
