    Solomon Islands, mid 20th century, superb and very large mother-of-pearl inlaid wood sculpture of a crocodile, symbolizing immortality. It carries a fish in its mouth. The back is adorned with a turtle, signifying the wisdom of the warlord. The tail is decorated with a coiled snake to celebrate the appearance of life on earth. This type of sculpture has a strong yet refined aesthetic. Due to its size and the quality of its attributes, it would have been destined for a high-ranking family, or would have been found in a house shared by the inhabitants of the same village.
    Length 80 cm. The scale witness on the last photograph is a small model of a lighter from a well-known brand.
