Western Ivory Coast, Bété people, first half of the 20th century, superb hardwood mask with an incredibly modern dark-brown patina, featuring the spider. It presided over peacemaking ceremonies after armed conflicts. It provokes an emotional and aesthetic shock in the viewer, thanks to the frontal nature of its surrealist construction, but also respect and questioning, thanks to the feeling of inner power that emanates from this face. Part of a limited corpus, it takes up the characteristics of the primitive iconography of Bété masks (the visored forehead, the slitted globular eyes and four converging, curved horns framing the face).
Height 25 cm (42 cm with base). Width 14.4 cm. The scale indicator on the last photograph is a small model of a lighter from a well-known brand.
Good condition apart from normal wear and unaffected old restorations.
