Indonesia, island of Java, late 19th century - early 20th century, very attractive old mask from the Râmâyana theater in polychrome wood depicting the demon character Rakjsasa. A more recent leather tab, replaced due to wear and tear and attesting to the piece's extensive use, is visible on the reverse. It enabled the dancer to keep the mask on his face without holding it with his hands, by biting the tab. A particularly well-executed piece, both in terms of carving and painting quality.
Mask height 19 cm (28 cm with base). The scale indicator on the last photograph is a small model of a well-known brand of lighter.
