India, 19th century, beautiful and unusual bronze hanging altar dedicated to the elephant goddess Lakshmi, also called Gajalakshmi, consort of Vishnu, goddess of happiness, prosperity, wealth and abundance. Seated in the lotus position, Lakshmi is surrounded by two elephants bathing her with water from their trunks. This iconography, which appeared very early (6th century B.C.), can be seen on ancient Indian temples, coins, etc.
