China, early 20th century, very handsome pair of carved wooden Fo dogs resting on a superb miniature console in dense, semi-precious wood, reminiscent of the zitan so highly prized by the emperors. Both sides of the console are adorned with a stylized lingzhi in the style of the tops of ruyi scepters.
Each of the Fo dogs rests on an inverted double pedestal, one paw on a sphere. In each mouth is a small movable sphere. The subjects are proud, adopting a haughty stance. They are carved with fine motifs, giving them a beautiful realism.
Overall dimensions: Height 36 cm. Length 37.5 cm. Height of each Fo dog 22 cm. The scale marker on the last photograph is a small lighter from a well-known brand.
Good condition except for slight wear and traces of previous fittings, such as a notch on the tail of one of the two dogs and holes on the console used to attach them.
