Andrée SIMON, painter born in 1896, died in 1981. Originally from Normandy, she taught drawing for a few years before devoting herself entirely to painting, setting up her first studio in Rennes in 1928. Her style was figurative and very Cézanne-like. She befriended André Lhote, who had taught her painting at Mirmande in the Drôme, and with whom she discovered the village of Gordes, a real coup de coeur. With her husband, she bought a house and lived there for forty years. Andrée Simon and André Lhote were later joined by numerous artists, including some of international renown such as Victor Vasarely, Serge Poliakoff, Marc Chagall and Jean Degottex.
Andrée Simon then turned to abstraction. For her, it was a natural and obvious step. She was inspired by the observation of trees, clouds and light effects. This abstract art, initially geometric, later becomes lyrical. But nothing is left to chance. Andrée Simon "constructs" her works according to a highly personal artistic approach. She gives free rein to her emotions while mastering them through a process derived from her own work and self-imposed method. In this way, she is noticed by enlightened amateurs and art critics with whom she maintains close relationships, such as Belon, Degand and Estienne.
Let's not forget that she was a woman in a misogynistic environment. The art world is above all a man's world. And yet, through her talent and her work, she was to establish herself as an essential artist with a very special talent.
This superb and important composition, an oil on canvas from 1978, reflects her late-life work in an assemblage of cheerful colors. It comes from the artist's studio collection, carefully preserved by Martin Nicolas de Barry, her grandson, who has done us the honor of opening its doors to us, so that we can show Andrée Simon's superb paintings, gouaches and watercolors in our own way.
Dimensions: Height 115 cm. Width 146 cm. No frame. Artist's signature lower right. Indication of the year 1978 and the month of March on the back of the canvas.
The work is in good condition, except for normal wear around the edges, which has no effect on the aesthetics.
