Funeral Mask – Chimu-lambayeque, Peru
Mask hammered in a thin plate of copper metal to which time has given a deep green patina. Chimu funeral masks come in many variations of size and refinement which gives each piece a uniqueness that is particular to it.
On the other hand, we can note that a great uniformity is evident in the mask productions of this culture, respecting artistic canons as well as an aesthetic that is very particular to them. Thus the shape of the face of this mask obeys the following characteristics: drop-shaped eyes, a mouth inscribed with two parallel lines and a protruding nose coming from a piece of metal.
This type of mask covered the faces of the deceased from the Lambayeque valley. They could wear several of these funerary masks which were attached one on top of the other, covering the head of the deceased.
