Large Asmat Irian Jaya wooden shield, featuring stylized geometric decoration carved and coated with natural pigments.
It comes from the collection of Nina and Gilbert Wolmark. She was a cartoon producer and artist in the 1970s (Asterix, Ulysses 31, etc.) and a major collector of Oceanic art.
The Asmat were a very warlike people, headhunters, and greatly feared. The shield features a figure at the top making a gesture that is very insulting to these people, the equivalent of our middle finger, which is meant to impress and ridicule the enemy.
Total height 211 cm, good condition, some wear, beautiful patina of use with its plant braids attached to the edge.
