Ancient fragment of a ridgepole figure collected from the Blackwater region of Papua New Guinea. The umbrella figures evoke the founding myths of the tribe and are displayed at each end of the roofs of the ceremonial huts. These sculptures commonly feature an ancestor of the tribe surrounded by totemic animals and in particular a bird often perched on the shoulders. This large fragment (103 x 75 x 56 cm) represents a bird of this type. Dense wood worn by its 15/20 years of exposure at the top of a ceremonial hut. Magnificent and exceptional collector's item sold with a presentation base. Traces of use. €1,600 base and shipping costs included for Europe.
