    BEAK MASK
    Mouth of the Sepik River, New Guinea
    Late 19th – early 20th century

    H. 14; W. 7 cm

    Oval carved wooden mask with a so-called "beak" nose, featuring a prominent ridge—which continues onto the forehead in a jagged fashion—and openworked into two small nostrils. Its openwork drop-shaped eyes are enhanced with red pigments and outlined with incised concentric circles. They widen to form a stylized heart. Two small ears are pierced at the temples. Its mouth, decorated with incisions, sketches a smile and features facial scarifications at the corners of the lips.

    This anthropozoomorphic representation, characteristic of the region, likely refers to that of the brag or pot nor spirit.
