War club - Plains Indian / North America
War club tomahawk made by Plains Indians in the 19th century. Probably of Sioux origin, it features a large, traditionally-shaped solid wood handle with a crook-shaped end, a crescent-shaped curved top, tapering slightly and bevelling towards the polished grip area, finished with a rear triangular pommel that is pointed and blunt at the end and pierced by a hole that could have held a drop of feathers or beads. At the corner, towards the upper third of the club, is a wrought-iron blade. Geometric motifs on both sides. Nails are present on both backs of the handle and on the stock, with holes of various sizes.
The piece comes from a historic Native American collection in eastern Montana. This is one of the finest collections of Native American weapons and antiques in Montana.
